Five Tips to Keep Your Newborn Safe On Halloween

You wouldn’t think Halloween to be a dangerous time of year for your newborn, but it can be, if you choose the wrong costume. Costumes, though cute and hauntingly adorable, can be a source of choking or suffocation hazard. Costumes made with improper materials can pose a fire hazard as well. So what do you look for in a costume for your newborn? Read on to see the top five tips to Newborn Halloween safety!

  1. Though you wouldn’t expect your newborn to be in danger of a fire hazard, Halloween is the season of candle-lit jack-o-lanterns and other potential fire dangers. Choose costumes made with flame-retardant materials. If you’re making a costume, make sure you choose non-flammable materials to design your infant’s costume.

  1. When choosing a costume, make sure all parts are firmly attached. A loose button or straggling piece of elastic can be a choking hazard for your newborn. Though you might think your little one is safe because their grasping techniques aren’t quite formed, it’s better to be safe than sorry. Also, a loose piece of elastic, ribbon or string can become caught on something and become a strangulation hazard.

  1. Though you may be tempted to doll up your little one with makeup, resist the urge. Costume grade make up may have chemicals that can irritate an infant’s sensitive skin and is not designed with them in mind. I suggest not using any kind of make-up on your newborn's skin.

  1. Avoid costumes that cover your newborn’s face. A mask or hood that’s too big could be a potential suffocation hazard. A mask should never be used on a newborn..

  1. When choosing a costume, keep comfort in mind as well as safety. Sometimes the cutest costumes are uncomfortably elaborate. Snaps, buttons, zippers and hooks can frustrate you and baby, especially if there’s a diaper emergency! Finally, if your newborn likes to be swaddled, choose a bunting-type costume, which encloses the feet. They’ll be cozy and secure while looking hauntingly adorable!

Now that you know what to look for in a newborn’s costume, you and your baby should be able to relax and enjoy the fun Halloween brings. Remember to avoid flammable materials, loose buttons and go for comfort, and your baby’s costume should be bewitchingly safe!
